About Barbara: Barbara Rubel
is a Board Certified Expert in Traumatic Stress
and Diplomate, American Academy of Experts in
Traumatic Stress. She is a Certified Bereavement
Specialist and Pastoral Bereavement Counselor.
Barbara received her BS in Psychology and holds
a Masters degree in Community with a Thanatology
concentration from Brooklyn College. Rubel was
a Hospice Bereavement Counselor, a Consultant
for the NJ Office of the Attorney General and
UMDNJ to support those impacted by September
11th and has taught undergraduate and graduate
courses at Brooklyn College. Since 2003, she
has been a Consultant for the Dept. of Justice,
Office for Victims of Crime (OVCTTAC).
Emmy Award Winning Documentary:
In Barbara's riveting talks, she speaks of her
personal experience. Both of Barbara’s
parents were retired NYC police officers and
three weeks before she gave birth to triplets,
her father died by suicide. Barbara’s
story was featured in a PBS Emmy award winning
documentary, Fatal Mistakes: Families Shattered
by Suicide, narrated by Mariette Hartley.
Accomplished Author: Barbara's
first book, "But I Didn't Say Goodbye:
Helping children and families after a suicide"
drew on her experience as a suicide survivor
to offer professionals assistance in helping
grieving families. She is the author of the
widely acclaimed 30 hour continuing education
course book for Nurses, "Death, Dying,
and Bereavement: Providing compassion during
a time of need", sold through Western Schools.
Rubel is the co-author of the Dept. of Justice,
Office for Victims of Crime, Training curriculum,
"Compassion Fatigue: Vicarious Trauma".
Barbara also developed the resource, Palette
of Grief®: The art of dealing with loss
and life-changing events.
