Dr. Gary Brown is a specialist
in the area of Critical Incident Stress Management
(CISM). He is a clinical member of the International
Critical Incident Stress Foundation. He holds
two board certifications as an expert in traumatic
stress and crisis response, and was recently
awarded the designation of Fellow with the American
Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress.
One of the most active and experienced pre-incident,
on-scene, and post-incident disaster mental
health specialists in the United States, he
has served as a crisis interventionist for numerous
fire services - urban and wild land - including
the United States Forest Service; the Torrance
Fire Department; Culver City FD, Santa Barbara
FD; and the Los Angeles City Fire Department.
In addition to serving in the public sector,
Dr. Brown also provides crisis intervention
services in the private and business sector.
He has responded to numerous incidents involving
violence in the workplace as well as other types
of man-made, natural, and technological events.
A consultant to various local, regional, and
national media outlets, he has also appeared
on The Learning Channel’s production of
“The Secret World of Paramedics”
and has appeared on CNN, CBS, NBC, ABC as well
as being quoted in various print media.
An on-scene and post-incident disaster specialist,
he consults for corporate managers; incident
commanders and other responders during small,
medium, and large scale casualty incidents;
provides pre and post-incident education, training,
and support for a wide spectrum of agencies,
elected and appointed governmental officials,
as well as local and national media services.
An active member of the emergency services
community, he is also a recipient of numerous
local and national honors and commendations
for his extensive and ongoing efforts to serve
those who have been impacted by traumatic events.
Dr. Brown served two tours in Vietnam with
the United States Navy spanning 1967-1969.

Group Crisis Intervention
Designed to present the core elements of a comprehensive,
systematic and multi-component crisis intervention curriculum,
the Group Crisis Intervention course will prepare participants
to understand a wide range of crisis intervention services.
Fundamentals of Critical Incident Stress Management
(CISM) will be outlined and participants will leave
with the knowledge and tools to provide several group
crisis interventions, specifically demobilizations,
defusings and the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing
(CISD). The need for appropriate follow-up services
and referrals when necessary will also be discussed.

Designed to provide participants with the latest information
on critical incident stress management techniques and
post-trauma syndromes. Participants in the ICISF course
will have been exposed to the specific, proven strategies
to intervene with those suffering the ill effects of
their exposure to trauma.
This course requires previous training and experience.
ICISF’s “Group Crisis Intervention”
should be viewed as a prerequisite.

Terrorism: Psychological Impact and Implications
Acts of terrorism are unparalleled in their potential
to undermine psychological stability. This course will
explore preparedness and response to terrorism with
an emphasis on at-risk populations, coping mechanisms,
resiliency, self-care for disaster responders, and lessons
learned from the Oklahoma City bombing and the attacks
of 9/11/01. Psychological and psychosomatic symptoms
will be presented, with discussion of how reactions
may vary depending on the type of weapon utilized (chemical,
biological, radiological, nuclear, explosive, and cyber-terrorism).
Other topics will include recent innovations in response
to catastrophic disasters and terrorism, including Family
Assistance Centers and Respite Centers.
This course is designed for anyone who wants to be
prepared for effective response to terrorism, including
first responders, emergency managers, the military,
health and mental health professionals, chaplains and
spiritual care personnel, disaster workers, childcare
workers and school personnel, and responders in the
corporate sector.
